Legacy Trip – Into the Valley of Death

Back in 2013 and 2014, we took two trips overland into Death Valley, CA

The first trip in 2013 was a entrance through the ghost town of Ballarat, CA. This route took us past many Adopt-a-cabins and homestead sites. Some of these include; Barker Ranch, once home of the infamous Charles Manson and his “family” and Geologists Cabin, which overlooks the famous Striped Butte. It is amazing how much plant life flourishes in such a hostile environment.  Being my first trip into Death Valley, I was literally shocked to see so much “green”. There are also many unusual geographic features in the area that defy logic, but are incredibly beautiful.

The second trip in 2014 saw us start in the town of Bishop, CA and work our way down Saline Valley. With many abandon mine shafts and encampments, we were treated to plentiful stop offs. Additionally, we visited the hot springs, the famous Race Track Playa, and Ubehebe Craters. In both trips we visited many of the more touristy Death Valley sites like Titus Canyon, Badwater Basin, Rainbow Canyon and the ghost town of Rhyolite. I can tell you, until you have actually seen the rocks on Race Track Playa, pictures do no justice. A simply magical place. We will return!
